At Kind Family Dentistry, the Registered Dental Hygienist is a licensed primary healthcare professional, oral health educator, and clinician who provides preventive, educational, and therapeutic services supporting total health for the control of oral disease and the promotion of oral health.

Role of the Dental Hygienist includes:

Clinician

Assesses, diagnoses, plans, implements, and evaluates treatment for prevention, intervention, and control of oral diseases while practicing in collaboration with other professionals.

Educator/ Health Promoter

Uses educational theory and methodology to analyze health needs, develops health promotion strategies, and delivers and evaluates the results of attaining or maintaining oral health for individuals or groups.

Team Player

Using universal precautions to properly sterilize instruments by using the ultrasonic, bagging instruments and placing them in the proper sterilizer. Properly care for office, equipment, and team. Offer any type of services needed to back-office assistants, DR, or front office staff when down time is available.  The Registered Dental Hygienist reports to Owner Dentist and Office Manager.

Duties include:

  • Digital radiographs
  • Take 3D scans.
  • Perform oral cancer screening.
  • Administering local anesthetic and Nitrous oxide
  • Give a proper dental hygiene diagnosis—follow Hygiene Protocol as described by Dr. Kovacik.
  • Perform prophylaxis and fluoride varnish application.
  • Perform Scaling and Root planning.
  • Perform full mouth debridement.
  • Educate patients on oral disease.
  • Sterilize instruments.
  • Stock hygiene room and list needed supplies on supply order form.
  • Properly clean and disinfect hygiene room.
  • Help assistants with cleaning up office and putting away supplies.
  • Do appropriate “downtime” activities” whenever there is a cancelled or missed appt, including helping to fill schedule, calling on recare, and other activities as listed on downtime List.
  • Evaluate production and collections on an ongoing basis to ensure the meeting of goals.
  • Complete assigned tasks as part of the End of Day Checklist each day
  • Participating in team building exercises and providing feedback and ideas for improving overall team cohesiveness and productivity as well as improving systems within hygiene specifically
  • Maintains professional, respectful communication with all patients and team members.

Steps to follow during patients first or recare appointment:

  • Reviewing medical history with pt and note any change in the Dentrix Health History module.
  • Ask pt if they have any pain or problems with oral cavity.
  • Take digital radiographs required for proper diagnosis of oral disease.
  • Use Hygiene Sheet per Doctor
  • Build rapport with patients (learn about family, hobbies, etc.)
  • Take picture of patient (if NP only or if no pic currently exists on file)
  • Perform an extra oral and intra oral exam (note any abnormalities with possible referral)
  • Evaluate dentition for caries, possible concerns about old fills etc. (take intra oral pics as needed)
  • Perform and chart full mouth periodontal probing at each visit for every pt 18 and older.
  • Based on periodontal probing give pt the proper dental hygiene diagnosis
  • Educate pt on oral disease and practicing proper oral hygiene.
  • Use before and after diagnostic images when appropriate.
  • Perform required treatment (prophy, begin SRP, debridement, referral)
  • Ensure consent form for SRP is completed, if necessary.
  • Oral hygiene instructions (ex: show pt proper flossing technique)
  • Discuss any outstanding tx patient needs to complete.
  • Schedule pts next visit and give pt oral hygiene supply bag.
  • Provide patient w/ next appt card and ask for referral.
  • Escort pt to check out area and tell front office staff about any treatment needed or if another appointment needs to be made.
  • Properly disinfect and set up room for next patient.
