Job Title: Hygiene Assistant Reports to: Doctor(s) and Lead Hygienist Supervised by: Practice Manager Effective Date: April 1, 2025 PURPOSE The Hygiene Assistant’s primary responsibility is to provide support and assistance to Doctors, Hygienists, and Dental Assistants in the clinical areas of the office. Help minimize unnecessary wait times in the hygiene bay while aiding in providing quality care to the patient. JOB RESPONSIBILITY Depending on the size and the needs of a particular office, the Hygiene Assistant will perform a variety of responsibilities and be cross-trained in many or all of the following: Always greet patients with a smile and bring patients back into the clinical area for their appointments. Make a positive first impression by using the patient’s and parent’s names with a welcoming attitude, demeanor, and a smile. The general nature of the appointment should be explained to help set proper expectations for the appointment. Assist the Doctor, Hygienist, and Dental Assistant in preparing the patient’s chair with the needed supplies and instruments when needed. Clean the chairs and rooms following treatment to prepare for the next patient. Expanded Duties assistants may perform duties as appropriate, needed, and directed by the Hygienist and or Doctor. Assist in the flow of patients: bring the patient back for treatment, assist throughout the appointment, guide patients and parents to the front desk upon completion of their appointment, and assist in any other area needed to help others in guiding patients through the visit. One of the primary goals of the Hygiene Assistant is to minimize unnecessary wait times. Ensure proper cleaning, sterilization, and maintenance of all operatory equipment, instruments, chairs, and work stations based on OSHA regulations and the Company standards. Assist the Hygienist in charting dentition and entering clinical notes of the patient. Obtaining X-Rays: quality images can be taken on most patients, by comforting and encouraging hesitant patients. Clinical Assistants that are x-ray certified will obtain any necessary periapical, bitewing, and panoramic x-rays for the appointment. If you are unable to obtain the requested x-rays, seek assistance from another staff member or attempt the x-rays after the cleaning. The doctor may defer radiographs for six months. Maintain patient confidentiality through HIPAA compliance as well as adhere to all OSHA rules and regulations. Work as a team within the organization- partnering with the Practice Manager, Doctors, Hygienists, Dental Assistants, Front Desk Coordinators and other Clinical Assistants to maintain consistency and teamwork. EXPECTED RESULTS AND MEASURES The Hygiene Assistant is expected to conduct him or herself with a high degree of professionalism in all work assignments and related duties. The Practice Manager and Doctors will evaluate the Hygiene Assistant’s performance pursuant to the duties outlined in this job description and in the performance of other duties that may be assigned over a 90-day period and then annually. Each Hygiene Assistant will be evaluated on his or her attitude, ethics, customer service, clinical procedures, administrative duties, and teamwork. All employees are required to follow the rules and regulations as set forth by the Company Employee Handbook and other service publications. SPECIFIC SKILLS Must be certified as a Dental Assistant. Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills- must be able to establish and maintain positive working relationships. Must be customer service oriented and able to always communicate with a pleasant demeanor. Communication- effective written and verbal communication is a must with all staff and management. Must be able to project a capable and professional image-one that is reflective of Company Values. Must possess excellent organizational skills- strong attention to detail, be able to multitask and perform job duties in a timely manner. The Hygiene Assistant must be able to successfully use practice management software and new programs, as required. . INDEPENDENT ACTION While some independent action is required, the Hygiene Assistant works under the supervision of the Practice Manager. He or she takes directions from others including the Doctor, Lead Hygienist, and Dental Assistant. CONTACT WITH OTHERS The Hygiene Assistant must be able to work well with the following: Doctor, Hygienist, Dental Assistant, team members, patients, and parents or guardians. ADDITIONAL DUTIES Additional duties will be assigned when necessary to achieve the Company standards and goals.
