Job Description Job Title : Hygienist Reports To : Dental Director FLSA Status : Non-Exempt Classification : On-Call Schedule : As needed, Monday - Friday 8-4:30 or 10-6:30. Preferably Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday availability Location : Onsite SUMMARY: Performs dental care and education designed to preserve teeth and prevent the spread of oral disease as part of the provider team in the Dental Department. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The information in this job description indicates the general nature and level of work performed. Duties and responsibilities may change (be assigned or removed) at any time with or without notice. Greet and seat patients, makes them feel at ease in the dental environment. Prophylaxis and scaling of patientâs teeth to remove supragingival and subgingival deposits of calculus. Subgingival curettage and root planning for treatment of periodontal disease. Topical application of fluoride gels routinely for all patients under the age of 18. Application for adults with high caries rate, decalcified areas, or root sensitivity. Polishing of patientâs teeth and with prophy cup and brush to remove stain and plaque. Flossing of patientâs teeth and instruction in proper use of dental floss. Perform soft tissue exams and oral cancer screenings. Provide desensitizers as needed. Feel and visually examine gingiva for sores and signs of disease. Expose digital radiographs. Chart oral conditions including periodontal probing of pockets, mobility, furcation involvement and recession. Perform expanded functions to the extent allowed by law, (i.e., administrating local anesthetics and nitrous oxide under a dentistâs supervision). Provide fissure sealants where designated by dentistâs orders. Charts dental conditions as indicated. Provide chair side instruction in oral hygiene procedures, periodontal disease, nutrition, and oral disease prevention. Emphasize the use of fluorides, water fluoridation and sealants. Clean, maintain, sharpen, and sterilize all instruments. Document treatment rendered and review/complete all necessary consent forms in patient chart according to clinic policy. Maintain machines, equipment and perform maintenance in the hygiene operatory according to clinic policy. Stock supplies in the hygiene room as needed. Attend continuing education to keep current with advances in the profession. Assist with in-service and department educational development activities. Provide clinical services and health education to improve and maintain oral health of school children. Conduct dental health clinics and education for community groups as needed. Assist with the development and implementation of a periodontal program. Maintain patientâs confidentiality at all times. Position may be reassigned during activation of EOP. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position has no supervisory responsibilities. TRAVEL & DRIVING REQUIREMENTS Travel may be required for this position. Driving may be required for this position. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE Graduate of an accredited dental hygiene school or program. 2 yearsâ experience beyond hygiene school. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, MEMBERSHIPS AND REGULATIONS Must have a current California Dental Hygienist license. Must have an NPI number. A valid California driverâs license and a good driving record will be required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. Current BLS CPR certification or attainment within 6 months of hire. Applicants must successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam, tuberculin skin test or x-ray and urine drug screen test to include marijuana. Health must be adequate to perform all duties of the position. Must pass criminal background check. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Competence in operation of standard dental equipment; cavitron, prophy jet, piezon, digital radiographs, PANO, dental chair and unit, sterilizers, hand scalers and curettes. Knowledge of OSHA blood-borne pathogen standard and adhere to safety rules and professional standards. Microsoft Office 365 (Email, Word, Excel, Power Point), Microsoft Teams (messaging, virtual meetings, file sharing) and Share Point. Electronic healthcare records; Epic, NextGen, Dentrix, QSI preferred.
