The Dental Assistant, Graduate Endodontics provides assistance to dental residents, students, patients, faculty and staff in the Graduate Endodontic program clinic and provides instruction to dental students and patients in accordance with the Clinic Operations Manual and standards of care in Dentistry. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Provide dental assistance and instruction to students during the examination, diagnostic testing, and treatment of patients and assistance to students and faculty during surgery and dental emergencies including: monitoring patient comfort; taking, developing, and providing instruction about x-rays; and assuring that clinic procedures are followed. 2. Assist dental students and faculty in the processing of paperwork related to the examination and treatment of patients including: creating and filing endodontic packets; and assigning new patients to students. 3. Maintain and monitor cleanliness and sterilization of dental equipment and instruments per OSHA requirements. 4. Order and stock supplies using MU Dental Store procedures and maintain all related paperwork. Assist with budget monitoring and planning. 5. Facilitate the patient billing process including: preparing and submitting patient insurance forms, collecting payment, and recording patient treatment. 6. Answer phones, schedule appointments, handle patient files and provide information and assistance to patients, hospitals, insurance companies and doctorâs offices. 7. Maintain patient recall system including: scheduling appointments; sending postcards and keeping records. 8. Check-out and monitor the return of supplies, equipment, and medication issued to students and faculty. 9. Coordinate the repair and maintenance of dental equipment. 10. Assist with the Sophomore Lab courses including: setting-up supplies and equipment; recording grades; and coordinating the lab schedule. 11. Communicate with suppliers and become familiar with new products and equipment. 12. Provide orientation to dental students new to the endodontic department. 13. Attend in-service programs and various meetings as required. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities High School education plus one year dental assistant experience required including knowledge of dental terminology and anatomy; regulator agency requirements; 4-handed dentistry; instrumentation; impression materials and cements; x-ray technology and procedures; sterilization procedures; patient management techniques; and Health-Care Provider CPR. Also requires dexterity, ability to tolerate long periods of bending, standing and walking, strong verbal and written communication skills as well as basic computer skills, excellent customer service and listening skills, discretion, flexibility, ability to work and communicate with people from a diverse population; and the ability to work independently with little supervision and frequent interruptions in a fast-paced environment. Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Previous experience working in an academic setting. Knowledge of Marquette University School of Dentistry policy and procedures.
