Job description Position Summary This job is responsible for providing dental assistance in support of the pediatric dentistry program. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provide personal dental assistance to a dentist or other dental clinician for the duration of a procedure. Set up and tear down dental operatories between patient appointments according to universal precautions protocol. Take dental radiographs according to the dentist's or physician's written or verbal orders while observing safety practices. Provide physical restraint during episodes of combative patient behavior. Assemble dirty instruments, decontaminate and make ready for retrieval and reprocessing. Maintain the functional readiness of dental equipment and emergency resources. Teach/reinforce general oral hygiene and home care skills prescribed for patients by dentists Provide general unit assistance as required. â¢Promote timely progression of care through effective team communication. Qualifications Education High school diploma or equivalent required and completion of an accredited dental assisting school strongly preferred Licenses & certifications Completion of dental radiography course and nitrous oxide monitoring course is required, but may be acquired in the initial year of employment. Must be a registered Dental Assistant in the State of Texas, or must be able to obtain license within 60 days of employment. Basic Life Support certification required. Experience Two to three years of previous experience as a Pediatric Dentistry Dental Assistant is strongly preferred. Specific knowledge, skills, and abilities The ability to hear and communicate with others in a clear, understandable, and professional manner. The ability to interact with peers, medical staff, and patients/patient families in a manner that represents Children's positively. The ability to interact effectively with varying personalities and in stressful situations. Knowledge of dental terminology strongly preferred. Physical demands Requires observation of and rapid reaction to changeable operations and patient behavior. Requires confined sitting on a regular basis. Requires some physical effort for lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling and providing physical restraint for combative patients. Requires visual and mental concentration on instruments, dials, readouts, and displays. ⢠This job requires special protective equipment, training and adherence to prescribed rules and procedures to avoid injury/illness from exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood borne pathogens, needle sticks, radiation and nitrous oxide. Requires long hours, at times, and physical stamina. May have emergency occurrences which require the ability to return to work after hours.
