Part-Time Periodontal Dental Assistant - Wilmington Periodontics & Implant Center - Southport, NC

We are seeking a dedicated, detail-oriented dental assistant to join our specialty practice in Southport, NC on Thursdays and Fridays from 7:30AM-4:30PM . The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of periodontal procedures, surgical protocols, and dental terminology, and be committed to delivering exceptional patient care. This role includes assisting the periodontist during surgical and non-surgical periodontal treatments, managing patient records, preparing and maintaining sterile surgical environments, and supporting efficient clinical flow. Responsibilities Assist the periodontist during periodontal procedures, including scaling and root planing support, implant placement, extractions, bone grafting, guided tissue regeneration, crown-lengthening, and other surgical treatments, using proper four-handed and surgical assisting techniques. Prepare operatory rooms for periodontal surgery by following strict aseptic and sterilization protocols, including setup of surgical trays, instruments, and barrier protection. Take high-quality intraoral radiographs and CBCT scans, ensuring accuracy and adherence to all safety protocols. Maintain accurate periodontal charting, medical histories, treatment notes, and documentation in compliance with HIPAA regulations. Manage patient flow efficiently, including pre-op, post-op, and sedation-related processes when applicable. Review pre-operative and post-operative instructions with patients, ensuring they understand healing expectations, medication instructions, and follow-up care. Assist with patient education regarding periodontal disease, maintenance protocols, implant care, and long-term oral health. Monitor inventory and ensure surgical and non-surgical supplies are fully stocked; coordinate ordering as needed. Collaborate with the periodontal and hygiene teams to ensure continuity of care and excellent patient experiences. Maintain sterilization logs, surgical room readiness, and compliance with OSHA and infection-control standards. Requirements Previous experience as a Dental Assistant, preferably in a periodontal or surgical dental setting. Familiarity with periodontal procedures, terminology, instrument identification, and aseptic surgical technique is strongly preferred. Experience with dental software systems such as Dentrix is a plus. Strong understanding of HIPAA, OSHA, and infection-control standards. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced specialty environment with a positive, team-oriented attitude. Excellent communication skills for patient interaction, surgical instruction review, and interdisciplinary coordination. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail, particularly in maintaining accurate clinical records and surgical documentation. Willingness to learn and stay current with advancements in periodontal and implant technologies, materials, and techniques.
