Description Job Title Dental Assistant Intern Location Tok, AK, US Organization Name Health Services Job Summary Job Summary: Under the direction of the Dental Assistant Supervisor, the Dental Assistant intern program will prepare students to become skilled members of the dental health care team to perform chair-side dental assisting. The intern will assist the hygienists, dentists, in providing oral health care, using a variety of procedures. Incumbent is expected to develop and practice professional demeanor. Intern will learn and be required to practice excellent customer service. Adhere to the TCC Ch'eghwtsen' model of service and guiding principle which requires providing timely and effective service along with the ability to interact with others in a way that inspires trust and demonstrates respect, compassion and empathy. Essential Functions Essential Functions: Under the supervision of the Dental Assistant Supervisor, the job incumbent will: 1. Develop mastery of the required curriculum which will involve after hours study. 2. Learn to assist the dentist in the dental operatory including the following: a. Prepares the dental operatory with instruments and necessary materials. b. Greets, seats, and drapes patients. c. Records patient medical history and vital signs. d. Using four handed dentistry technique, learns to pass instruments in a sequential manner specific for each dental procedure. e. Takes oral Radiographs (BiteWings, Periapical, Ceph, Occlusal and panaramic x-rays.) f. Assists the doctor in giving local anesthesia. g. Makes impressions of patient’s teeth for study models. h. Provides patients with post-operative instructions following surgery. Shows patients how to brush and floss. 3. Learn to clean and disinfect the operatory after use. Learn to set up the operatory utilizing infection control barrier techniques. Learn to processes instruments by wrapping, packing, and sterilizing instruments. 4. Learn to keep the units, cabinets and other areas (lab, darkroom, sterilization rooms) ready, stocked, clean and organized. Keeps an inventory control. 5. Learn OSHA guidelines and follows the work practices within theses guidelines. 6. Learn to teach patients proper oral hygiene instruction; brushing and flossing techniques, and causes of caries and Periodontal Disease. 7. Learn to perform office tasks such as scheduling appointments, answering the phone, billing, and inventory control. Greets the public. Helps patients fill out their demographics. Uses the computer to generate encounter forms and prints the daily schedules. 8. Learn to perform basic procedures in the dental office laboratory. a. Takes wax-bites. b. Makes night guards. c. Pours and trims study models for lab. d. Polishes appliances. e. Fabricates temporaries. 9. Learn to assist Dental Assistants and/or Dentists in preparation for travel 10. Learn the names of instruments, materials and supplies needed for dental treatment. Learns the anatomy of the mouth and names, numbers and surfaces of teeth. 11. Obtain certificate of competency in Radiology. 12. Obtain CPR training. Other Responsibilities: 1. Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: 1. High school diploma or GED equivalent. 2. Must be able to obtain CPR training within 60 days of hire. 3. Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions. 4. Must pass background check pursuant to federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act and State of Alaska background check. Supervision Physical demands: Position requires long periods of sitting, standing, recurring bending, stooping, crouching, stretching, and reaching. Job incumbent must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds in support of equipment/other. Patients may be required to be lifted bodily from time to time. Handles uncontaminated and contaminated needles on a regular basis. Job incumbent must be able to perform multiple tasks with frequent interruptions. Some travel required, mainly by road system. Summation Summation: Incumbent must demonstrate continued progress toward completion of curriculum throughout the internship. This is a six month internship to train students to become dental assistants. The goal of the Dental Assistant Internship program is for successful completion of the training curriculum which will lead to granting of a certificate of completion.
