Dental Hygienist Job Overview: A Dental Hygienist is responsible for cleaning and maintaining patients' teeth, educating patients about proper oral care, and assisting dentists in various dental procedures. They work directly with patients to ensure optimal oral health, focusing on disease prevention and oral hygiene. Key Responsibilities: Patient Care: Perform routine cleanings, scaling, and polishing of teeth to remove plaque, tartar, and stains. Apply fluoride treatments and sealants to help prevent cavities and tooth decay. Take dental X-rays (radiographs) to help detect issues like cavities, gum disease, and infections. Chart and record the patientâs oral health status, including any abnormalities or areas of concern. Assess patients' oral health and discuss treatment options or recommendations with the dentist. Patient Education: Educate patients on proper oral hygiene practices, including brushing, flossing, and diet. Provide advice on how to care for teeth, gums, and dental appliances (e.g., braces, dentures). Explain the importance of regular dental check-ups and maintaining oral health for overall well-being. Clinical Assistance: Assist the dentist during examinations and various dental procedures, such as fillings or extractions. Administer local anesthesia and assist with periodontal therapy. Sterilize and disinfect dental instruments, ensuring proper infection control protocols are followed. Record Keeping and Documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, noting treatment history, health conditions, and progress. Document procedures performed, patient responses, and any referrals made to the dentist for further evaluation. Preventive Care: Identify and monitor signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis, periodontitis, and oral cancer. Promote the importance of preventive treatments, including professional cleanings and routine check-ups. Office and Equipment Maintenance: Ensure that all dental equipment is clean, sterilized, and well-maintained. Keep the treatment area organized and ready for patients. Order supplies as needed, and assist in managing office inventory. Required Skills and Qualifications: Education: Associate's degree in Dental Hygiene (or higher), typically obtained from an accredited dental hygiene program.
