Clinical and Preventative Care · Assessment: Reviewing patient medical and dental histories, blood pressure, performing comprehensive dental and periodontal assessments, including probing depths, checking for oral cancer (head neck and soft tissue exams) and documenting findings accurately in the patient chart. · Prophylaxis and Periodontal Therapy: Performing dental prophylaxis (cleanings), scaling and root planning, debridement, and applying topical fluoride and sealants and indicated and prescribed by the dentist · Radiology: Exposing, processing, and interpreting high-quality diagnostic radiography (x-rays) in compliance with all state and safety regulations. · Anesthesia: Administering local anesthesia and/or nitrous oxide sedation. · Infection Control: Adhering strictly to all OSHA, HIPAA, and office infection-control protocols for instrument sterilization, operatory disinfection, and biohazard waste disposal. Patient Education and Communication · Educate patients of all ages on proper oral hygiene techniques, including brushing, flossing, and the use of other oral care aids. · Provide dietary counseling and explain the relationship between diet and oral health. · Discuss and explain the doctor's diagnosis and treatment recommendations, using a co-diagnosis approach to help patients understand their oral health needs and treatment plans. · Provide post-operative instructions following procedures. Documentation and Administration: · Identifying and documenting patient motivators · Accurately and thoroughly document all patient care, findings, treatments, and recommendations in the patient's electronic health record. · Assist in managing and maintaining the patient recall/continuing care system. · Assist with other administrative or clinical tasks as needed, such as helping the front office or chair-side assisting the dentist during downtime. · Safety and Compliance: Adhere to strict safety, infection control, and sterilization protocols as required by OSHA, HIPAA, and state regulations. · Maintain a clean, organized, and stocked clinical operatory environment. · Ensure all dental equipment is operational by following maintenance instructions, upkeep and sharpening of instruments and troubleshooting malfunctions. Qualifications and Skills · Current, active state license to practice as a Dental Hygienist. · Current CPR/BLS certification from the American Heart Association or Red Cross. · Certification for administering local anesthesia and/or nitrous oxide, if applicable and required by the state. Skills: · Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail. · Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with patients and the dental team. · Proficiency in using dental software, digital imaging, and other relevant dental technologies. · Ability to work both independently and cooperatively within a team setting. · Compassion and a patient-focused demeanor, especially for anxious individuals. · Upbeat and teamwork attitude Working Conditions The position involves regular exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, and dental materials common to a clinical environment. Physical requirements include frequent sitting, standing, bending, and the ability to perform detailed work using hands and fingers for precise instrumentation.
