Job Title: Dental Hygienist Minimum Educational Requirements: An Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited school is the minimum requirement. Work Experience: Previous dental hygiene work is not required, but it is preferred. Previous work experience is required in related areas dealing with the public. Of particular interest is experience in a teaching, or coaching role. Occupational Qualifications: A current license in good standing with the State of Indiana including radiographic and basic life support (CPR and AED) certification is required along with compliance with current continuing education requirements and successful completion of the regional examination in dental hygiene. Skill Set Required: Ability to form quality relationships with patients to coach them toward their desired level of health. Ability to relate the dental disease process to the patient’s current level of health. Above average organizational and time management skills. Above average written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage a schedule. Above average skills working with Windows-based computer programs. Above average ability to welcome and interact with our patients enthusiastically and personally during every contact with our patients. Proficiency in basic hygiene skills of scaling, root planing and curettage. Continuing Education: The Hygienist is required to attend continuing educational coursework at the doctor’s expense, which is deemed necessary by the doctor. These continuing education opportunities may involve air travel out of state. The Hygienist is expected to also seek out continuing education that contributes to their own personal growth and development. This would include courses not specifically related to dentistry such as coursework designed to improve managerial, business, and communication skills. Primary Responsibilities: To follow the parameters set forth by the doctor in the practice policies and systems while: Providing a predictable patient experience that is consistent with the practice philosophy and image. This is done by building relationships with patients and assisting them on their own journey to health. This is further supported by the Hygienist’s ability to build alliances with other team members so that the team’s coordinated efforts consistently connect our patients with our message of health-centered dentistry. Creating a positive environment in which our patients feel comfortable. This includes explaining the dental experience to every patient in a way that invites dialog and fosters understanding. Enthusiastically celebrating with our patients as they achieve ever-increasing levels of dental health and encouraging them to keep striving until they reach their ultimate goals, which they create with the doctor. Assisting in the efforts to reactivate patients in the practice. The hygienist will assume an active duty in contacting disconnected patients via telephone and letters. Maintaining a clean and organized work area where patients and colleagues alike feel comfortable. Willingly supporting other team members, in whatever form necessary, to complete tasks and accomplish mutually agreed upon goals. Following the practice’s established dental hygiene systems including the new patient experience and dental fitness program to deliver exceptional and consistent services to our patients.
