Duties Assist the periodontist during surgical procedures, including tissue management, suturing, and handling surgical instruments with precision. Prepare treatment rooms by sterilizing instruments, setting up necessary supplies, and ensuring all equipment is functioning correctly according to aseptic techniques. Take and develop high-quality dental X-rays and medical imaging, including 3D scans when applicable, to support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Manage patient flow by greeting patients, updating medical records, and verifying vital signs to ensure safety and comfort throughout visits. Maintain strict infection control protocols in compliance with HIPAA regulations and OSHA standards to protect patient and staff health. Document procedures accurately in electronic medical records (EMR systems) such as Eaglesoft or Dentrix, including medical history updates and procedural notes. Support the dental team with administrative duties like scheduling appointments, managing patient records, and assisting with billing or coding when needed. Educate patients on post-operative care instructions, periodontal health maintenance, and proper oral hygiene practices to promote long-term oral health. Collaborate seamlessly with the team using four-handed dentistry techniques for efficiency and enhanced patient care. Stay current on dental terminology, anatomy knowledge, infection control practices, and emerging technologies like digital scanners or Epic systems to ensure top-quality service. Skills Proven experience in dental assisting within a general dentistry or specialty setting such as periodontics or oral surgery. Strong knowledge of dental terminology, anatomy, infection control procedures, and aseptic techniques. Proficiency with EMR systems like Eaglesoft, Dentrix, or Epic for accurate documentation of medical records and procedures. Skilled in taking X-rays, medical imaging—including 3D scans—and interpreting radiographs for diagnosis support. Familiarity with HIPAA compliance standards to ensure patient confidentiality at all times. Ability to perform vital signs assessments and assist with pediatric dentistry when required. Experience supporting four-handed dentistry practices for efficient workflow during complex procedures. Knowledge of medical documentation practices including medical coding for insurance purposes. Excellent communication skills as a dental receptionist when coordinating patient care or answering inquiries. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks efficiently while maintaining attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
