ICMS Dental Dental Hygienist Job Description Summary: Performs a variety of clinical oral health procedures, oral health education and record keeping duties. Provide high quality, compassionate, patient centered care as part of a dental team. Perform dental prophylaxis treatment by scaling and polishing teeth. Perform non-surgical periodontal treatment (scaling and root planing) and periodontal therapy. Administer local anesthetic under the direct supervision of the dentist. Document existing restorations, existing periodontal condition and notable areas of possible disease of both the soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity and adjacent anatomy for the dentist’s review. As appropriate, may call the dentist for immediate or emergent evaluation. Take dental radiographs to aid in the evaluation of hard tissues of the oral cavity. Administer topical fluoride treatments as needed. Place dental sealants as needed according to treatment plans. Update, document and maintain medical history of patients, highlighting significant information for the dentist’s review. Provide appropriate and relevant oral hygiene instruction to patients and patient caregivers. Practice universal precautions and appropriate infection control practices. Provide administrative support, including patient documentation and record keeping, patient scheduling and billing as appropriate. Help maintain sterilization center as appropriate. Maintain patient health information confidentiality in accordance with all appropriate state and federal HIPPA laws. Participate in ICMS school fluoride and screening program. Perform related duties not listed, as required. Obtain and maintain an unrestricted State of Maine Dental Hygienist License, including dental radiography license and local anesthesia permit. Complete appropriate continuing education.
