A Promise to my Future Dental Hygienist: It is no secret that many dentists are looking to hire a hygienist, and there are not enough hygienists to fill those positions. As a dentist, I try to put myself in my hygienist's shoes and imagine being a hygienist myself. Sure, I can complete a prophy or SRP, but my hygienists are so much more than the procedures they perform. My hygienists are evaluating the oral health, and presenting their findings to both the patient and myself. They are advocates, and more importantly, cheerleaders for the patients that may never have been taught the proper way to brush or floss and need our compassion and encouragement. I could go on and on about what hygienists mean to the patient, and I think us as dentists, need to really realize our hygienists aren't just here to clean teeth; they are co-providers in our practices. I would like to welcome a new hygienist into our practice as a co-provider so that TOGETHER we can assess and address the needs of our patients in a healthy and supportive way. Our office has an amazing team because we have compassion for each other and our patients; we work together and strive to encourage each other in and out of the office. We are advocates for continuing education, so that we can provide the best, most advanced oral care we can. My promise to you is to do just that- continue to build relationships, build on your current skills, and treat you as the co-provider you are.
